How to archive a Twitter thread

  1. Paste a public post link

    Paste a link to any post in the thread. TwiFlux retrieves the sequence through its public provider and renders a full inspection preview.

Digital preservation architecture: Package structure & schemas

Most web scrapers output transient files that break as soon as remote media servers expire. TwiFlux generates a permanent, self-contained archival bundle:

  • Zero-dependency offline HTML: thread.html embeds all typography and layout styles inline. Double-click to open in any web browser without internet access or CDN dependencies.
  • Relative asset referencing: Both Markdown and HTML files link to ./media/image-*.jpg. No hardcoded cloud URLs, preventing future 404 image errors.
  • JSON provenance manifest: Contains author verified flags, original snowflake tweet IDs as strings, ISO 8601 publication timestamps, and checksums.

Client-side in-memory compression & privacy

Unlike cloud archiving services that store your queries on central databases, TwiFlux performs compression directly in your browser using Web Workers. Your archived content is saved directly to your local file system, ensuring total privacy.

Twitter thread archive questions

What files and folder structure are included in the archive ZIP?

The generated ZIP package contains: (1) thread.md with YAML frontmatter for Obsidian / Notion, (2) thread.html as a self-contained offline viewer with embedded responsive CSS, (3) manifest.json with full machine-readable metadata and relative file maps, and (4) a media/ folder containing all original downloaded JPEG/PNG images.

How does the archive protect against link rot and deleted tweets?

All media assets and post texts are decoupled from Twitter CDN servers. In both thread.md and thread.html, image references use relative local paths (e.g. ./media/tweet-18884-01.jpg). Even if the original tweet is deleted or Twitter's domain changes, your offline package remains permanently intact.

What schema does manifest.json follow?

manifest.json includes author object (name, handle, id_str), thread root ID, item count, retrieval timestamp (ISO 8601 UTC), provider completeness diagnostics, and an array of post objects containing status IDs, text, timestamps, and local media path mappings.

Why is there a 20 MiB safety limit on the archive package?

The entire ZIP bundle is synthesized client-side inside your browser using streaming JSZip compression. The 20 MiB budget protects mobile and low-memory devices from browser tab crashes (OOM) while ensuring plenty of headroom for dozens of high-res photos.
